SA Billionaire wants to build a new world-class airport just 13km from a Cape Town suburb.

South African billionaire Rob Hersov says he wants to "build a new world-class airport", just 13km from the northern suburb of Durbanville.

In a Biznews interview, Hersov shared that he has purchased the airport known as Fisantekraal Airport (FAFK) and plans to turn it into the "Lanseria Airport of Cape Town".

History of the Cape Winelands Airport

Also known as the Cape Winelands Airport, it is an ex-South African Air Force airfield built circa 1943 initially for the operation of Lockheed Ventura bombers before being transferred to the local municipality in the 1960s.

"It has been under private ownership since 1993 and is conveniently located approximately half-way between the Cape Town CBD and Paarl.

"The largest aircraft to have landed at Cape Winelands Airport was the Lockheed C-130 Hercules on 22 August 2017. Many advertisements and movies have also been filmed on location at Cape Winelands Airport, which has since been acquired by the creative group who brought you playful spaces in Cape Town like the Old Biscuit Mill, the River Club and South Africa’s original art boutique hotel – Daddy Long Legs."

As a wealthy private investor Hersov, who has spent some 30 years abroad is said to be back in SA on an economic and political offensive. No stranger to the aviation industry, he successfully built and sold a private jet business to fellow billionaire Warren Buffet. No timeline is available for the developments to the airport as yet.
